Hello Goodtimers! | April 2021

Many of you have been wondering “what’s going on with Goodtime Getaways.” Believe me, I’m wondering that myself. The year 2020 was horrible for everyone and I am so glad its over; things certainly changed for me. If you’ve stopped by my office recently you know its been converted to a beauty salon. No - I’m not doing hair styling, but the new occupants do a great job and I encourage you to patronize them. Magic Carpet Ride, the motor coach company, has downsized from 4 offices to 2 and employees have dropped from 25 full/part time workers to 3. Much of what GTG does will depend on the future of Magic Carpet Ride and that is still undetermined.

Recently, several people have asked when, or if, GTG will be resuming trips. At this point I’m not sure its feasible. To start selling trips again I’d have to reactivate my insurance and travel license and post a $15,000 bond with the State - just like starting over. I’d have to work from home - maybe a day or two at the MCR office to collect payments. Only cash or checks would be accepted - no credit cards. In 2019 we paid $18,000 in card processing fees. Newspaper advertising is not an option - it’s way to expensive for the return received from the ads at a cost of approximately $35,000 in 2019. Social media and word of mouth would be the only forms of advertising, and perhaps postings in some communities providing the HOA and management permits it. Trips not booked and paid for by established deadlines would be immediately cancelled. Attractions, restaurants, hotels, etc. have suffered financial losses and cannot afford to wait for last minute payments and will not give refunds for deposits on cancelled trips. Because of that, GTG would not issue refunds regardless of how dire the circumstances. Bus charter prices have gone up considerably, necessitating 40 to 45 passengers on each trip offered. All these factors would make the trips a great deal more expensive than in the past - in some cases almost double. I’m laying it all out there for you to think about and decide for yourselves if you would like to resume bus trips under those circumstances.

I’d love to hear comments and suggestions from you. Your feedback will give me an idea of whether it is practical for me to resume a limited number of trips per year or if I should consider myself permanently retired. Like all of you, Bobbi and I are going a little “stir crazy” and if it is financially feasible for us to do an occasional trip, we would certainly enjoy it. We miss you and all the good times we had with you while on the road. Please email us at dottie@goodtimegetaways.com.

Bobbi and I and all the folks left at MCR hope you enjoy your Easter and Passover Feasts,

Happy Spring!
